German mills produced 2.48 million tons of crude steel in June, down 27.3 percent from 3.4 million tons in June 2019, German steel federation WV Stahl said recently.
In Germany, blast furnace output fell 35.8 percent to 1.53 million tons in June from a year earlier, while electric arc furnace output fell 7.3 percent to 941,000 tons.
German crude steel production fell 26 per cent year on year in the second quarter and 6 per cent in the first.
Crude steel output in the first half of 2020 was 17.46 million tons, down 15.7 percent from the same period last year.
In the second quarter, pig iron production plunged 34.5% to 1.45 million tons from a year earlier, while total output in the first half of the year was 10.9 million tons, down 18.2% from a year earlier, the data showed.
German steelmakers are cutting capacity as industrial production resumes, despite a slow rise in steel prices in northwest Europe.
Production is expected to be further dampened by the summer holidays as mills carry out routine maintenance work, combined with extended shutdowns due to weak demand.
