Impact test refers to the energy absorbed by the material during the fracture process. This absorbed energy is a measure of the toughness of a given material and is used as a tool to study the temperature-dependent brittle-ductile transition. It is used to determine whether the material is brittle or ductile.
There are basically two types of impact tests: pendulum and drop weight. Izod, Charpy, and tensile impact are the most common of the pendulum type tests.
Impact test is a test of the ability of a material to withstand impact. Engineers use it to predict its performance under actual conditions. Many materials fail suddenly at impacts, defects, cracks or gaps.
