API 5L specification is a pipeline standard established by the American Petroleum Institute 2113. Grade X42 is a steel grade of steel pipes in the standard. The steel grades in API 5L line pipes are: A, B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80, X90, X100, X120, etc. Its naming method is basically named with the capital letter X plus the minimum yield strength of the material. Of course, it is not just the difference in yield strength between different steel grades, they are very different in manufacturing process, chemical composition, physical properties, inspection methods, etc.
When API 5L pipeline standard was formulated, it considered that there are two basic levels of standard technical requirements for API 5L line pipes. Therefore, it has established two product specification level technical requirements: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL1 provides general quality requirements for line pipes. PSL2 includes increased chemical composition, notch toughness, strength properties and mandatory requirements to supplement NDE.
