What is carbon steel? Carbon steel is a kind of steel material with carbon as the main alloying element. Its properties are mainly defined by the carbon content. For carbon steel, the amounts of other alloying elements such as chromium, manganese, cobalt, tungsten are not defined.
Carbon steel can be divided into high carbon steel and low carbon steel. High carbon steel has a carbon content of 0.3-1.70%, and low carbon steel has a carbon content of 0.05-0.15%. Low carbon steel is one of the most commonly used steel materials due to its relatively low manufacturing price. Mild steel is a form of low carbon steel. The main difference between carbon steel and mild steel material is that carbon steel has a higher amount of carbon, while mild steel material has a relatively low amount of carbon, which is about 0.16–0.29% by weight. Mild steel material is less strong and harder than other carbon steel materials.
