ASTM A588 Grade A steel is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, and bars. They have higher properties of elongation and also they are also excellent in terms of yield strength as well as tensile strength. They are further resistant to corrosive conditions and can easily bear the cracking and pitting that happens due to the number of corrosive environments.
The atmospheric corrosion resistance steel ASTM A588 Grade A in most environments is substantially better than that of carbon structural steels with or without copper addition (see Note 1). When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 Grade A plate steel is suitable for many applications in the bare (unpainted) condition. This A588 Grade A plate is limited to material up to 8 in. [200 mm] inclusive in thickness.
A588 Grade A steel is mainly used for welded, riveted, or bolted construction but intended primarily for use in welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important.
